In recent years, increasing attention is paid to the role of culture outside urban areas, towards a more balanced territorial development. There, tangible and intangible heritage is the expression of a local identity to protect and enhance, by integrating planning processes with cultural, creative and tourism sectors. In this sense, cultural tourism, as a specific form of consumption, is a desirable development option for less known regions. The UNWTO defines Cultural Tourism as a “type of tourism activity in which the visitor’s essential motivation is to learn, discover, experience and consume the tangible and intangible cultural attractions/products in a tourism destination”. However, there is no uniformly accepted definition in this field. Furthermore, climate changes and its effects on territories and communities pose several challenges to tourism entrepreneurs, heritage managers, and spatial planners, which are asking how tourism will adapt. This contribution aims to present the several definitions of cultural tourism, collected through a literature review, and to apply a product approach to categorise it in different types that should be promoted outside urban areas. Then, a methodology to evaluate the susceptibility of the different types of cultural tourism to climaterelated hazards is proposed. The presented findings are the first activities of a PhD research, aimed at investigating the relation between climate change and cultural tourism outside urban centre, to plan adaptive strategies for local development and regeneration.
