A passage by the chronicler Erchempertus suggests the existence of a law, the text of which we don’t know, but whose importance in the history of monastic institutions in Lombard Southern Italy we can guess. By imposing the use of the oath, Atenulfus had made it harder to prove property. In this article, an attempt will be made to reconstruct the history of this procedural innovation.
