The article examines the historical memory of the Crimean War, which developed among educated residents of the Russian Empire shortly after its end. This memory, contrary to the real experience of the participants, emphasized first of all the suffering of the common people who were believed to have sacrificed themselves in the name of the abolition of serfdom. This image of the Crimean War is still relevant for Russian education and historical research.
