This paper discusses some methodological aspects of the seminar classes on geography with a case study of Arctic Ocean. Particularly, is concerns general principles of the individual student work: how one can better design a GIS, how one can find, collect and analyse available geodata on the marine ecology. The paper presents a data reference sketch for the classes of geography. The paper deals with some aspects of effective teaching of geosciences with a case study of seminars on Arctic geography. In particular, the principles of students practical work and how to design and implement individual GIS-projects were reviewed. The course is suggested to be based on the collection and analysis of all available spatial information, data and maps on marine ecology in the Arctic area with instructions on the mapping of thematic databases.
