Based on documentary evidence, this paper seeks to investigate the role played by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, a leading exponent of the Partito d’Azione switched in 1960 to the Socialist Party, in promoting the reform of the Istituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dell’Arte in Rome. Stressing the importance of art and culture for the development of Italian society, his aim was to introduce a technocratic principle in the cultural heritage administration.
