La nuova destinazione delle chiese dismesse: un uso profano 'non indecoroso'

The decommissioning of a church is a prospect that affects not only the religious level, but also the one concerning the conservation and the historical and artistic understanding of the building itself and of the goods that it contains. Consequently, the discipline provided by the Code of canon law regarding the relegation to profane uses also assumes great relevance for the cultural sphere, especially with regards to which the new uses of the building could possibly be. In fact, the Code requires for them to be 'not sordid', albeit profane: a feature on the meaning of which is therefore convenient to dwell, in view of the changes in destination that have become increasingly frequent (and worrying) in recent years.
