The controversy over attribution concerning the pavement of the Vaselli Chapel (or the Chapel of Saint Sebastian) in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, whose protagonists were two great scholars of the last century, Gaetano Ballardini and Lino Sighinolfi, has never before been examined in full. Revisiting this controversy provides several points of reflection not with regards to the definitive confirmation of the Faentine nature of the artefact itself, which is certainly not to be doubted, but rather to investigate the methods of its creation, the timing of its installation and its centrality in establishing the chronology of the decoration of the Petronian sacellum, which began with the floor in 1487 and ended at the beginning of the new century with the stained glass window.

Abstract
The controversy over attribution concerning the pavement of the Vaselli Chapel (or the Chapel of Saint Sebastian) in the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, whose protagonists were two great scholars of the last century, Gaetano Ballardini and Lino Sighinolfi, has never before been examined in full. Revisiting this controversy provides several points of reflection not with regards to the definitive confirmation of the Faentine nature of the artefact itself, which is certainly not to be doubted, but rather to investigate the methods of its creation, the timing of its installation and its centrality in establishing the chronology of the decoration of the Petronian sacellum, which began with the floor in 1487 and ended at the beginning of the new century with the stained glass window.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
