This essay investigates the film adaptations of the fictional character created by Pierre Louÿs in his novel La femme et pantin. Every single film provides a different declination of Conchita, as well as of Don Mateo and, sometimes, of André Stévenol. Each adaptation, however, has at least one important element in common with all the others: that of differentiating its Conchita from the fictional Concha Pérez, while equally distancing her from the archetype of the femme fatale, if not also from the more cinematic dark lady.
