OBJECTIVES In recent years different restoration materials and cements came out of the market providing a wide range of choices. In this scenario, the dentist who approaches indirect resto-rations could easily find confusion about the correct adhesive protocol to use with the correct restorative material. Objectives of this Module is to provide an overview and classifi-cation of the different types of ce-ments currently available in the den-tal market to facilitate their knowl-edge and applicability to the clinician who is preparing to perform an indi-rect type of restoration. MATERIALS AND METHODS A review of the most recent scientific literature concerning the adhesive ce-mentation protocols and dental materi-als for indirect restorations was carried out. The data collected was summa-rized in tables and graphs. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The optimal cementation protocol is the one capable of creating microme-chanical retentions and chemical bonds at the level of the two adhesive interfaces. The materials that best re-spond to these requirements are resin cements, which are present on the market in various formulations and can be classified based on the polym-erization method or based on their ad-hesive strategy. The different physical, mechanical and optical properties of the restorative materials available on the market today guarantee the possi-bility of choosing the most suitable material in every clinical situation. However, different materials require a specific adhesive protocol to be fol-lowed so that the best adhesion val-ues can be achieved. CONCLUSIONS Within a scenario with such a vast range of choice of cementation and restoration materials, the dentist who approaches carrying out an indirect restoration must necessarily know the correct cementation protocols for each type of material or clinical situation. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Understand the different materials and the different cementation protocols af-fects directly the clinical success of in-direct adhesive restoration.
