In this work several plane dielectric barrier discharge actuators had been experimentally investigated. Each actuator is constituted by a planar electrode pair separated by a dielectric. Several actuator geometries, dielectric materials, and a.c. supply voltages and frequencies have been utilized. Rotational and vibrational temperatures have been appraised through spectroscopic measurements. Translational temperatures have been evaluated by thermographic investigations, and the fluid speed has been obtained by using a Pitot tube. Electric measurements have been performed to determine the average power and the electron number density. All these parameters have been correlated to evaluate the best configuration and operating conditions for the considered actuators.
