A study of the four artists who decorated ms. Français 187 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France prompts a discussion of painting in Liguria during the second quarter of the fourteenth century. The codex studied here – a cultivated manual of devo- tional education for lay people – is evidence of how decisive Gio- tto’s Paduan legacy was for the evolution of Genoese art, beyond the well-known influence of Siena. The manuscript is compared with two small altarpieces, also proposed here as Ligurian in or- igin because they reflect the same context. In addition, the thor- ough examination of ms. Français 187 reveals the eclectic and lively cultural climate of early-fourteenth-century Genoa.
