Morte a Venezia. Per la morte di Dante: l’invenzione e i documenti

Abstract. Study of important, new-found documents in the State Archives of Venice prompts these reflections on Dante’s death (1321), which is usually linked to the exiled Florentine’s mission as Ravenna’s ambassador to Venice. Influential factors are the historical circumstances relating not only to the salt trade in the Adriatic basin that prompted the politico-diplomatic expedition, but also – and especially – to the salt wars between Venice and Ravenna during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The conclusion, which leads to significant new hypotheses for Dante studies and beyond, is that Dante’s mission in Venice is to be considered a historiographical construct rather than a historical hypothesis.

Lo studio di importanti documenti ritrovati presso l'Archivio di Stato di Venezia che induce a riflettere sulla morte di Dante (1321), solitamente collegata alla missione dell'esule fiorentino come ambasciatore di Ravenna a Venezia. Influenti sono le circostanze storiche relative non solo al commercio del sale nel bacino adriatico che ha dato origine alla spedizione politico-diplomatica, ma anche - e soprattutto - alle guerre del sale tra Venezia e Ravenna durante i secoli XIII e XIV. La conclusione, che porta a nuove significative ipotesi per gli studi danteschi e non solo, è che la missione di Dante a Venezia è da considerarsi una costruzione storiografica più che un'ipotesi storica.
