In the above article the authors neglected to indicate that some of the data shown in Figs. 1–3 had previously been published in an article entitled “RNA as a new target for toxic and protective agents” by Carmela Fimognari, Piero Sestili, Monia Lenzi, Anahi Bucchini, Giorgio Cantelli-Forti, Patrizia Hrelia, Mutation Research – Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of Mutagenesis,648 (2008) 15–22. The data were part of parallel but separate investigations. The duplicate figures are appropriate to both studies and should have been properly cited in the present article as having been published in the previous article. The omission was unintentional and the 2008 study was cited throughout the present article. The authors apologize for this omission and are grateful to the editors for their thorough scrutiny, which allowed this potentially unethical issue to be rectified
