La questura di Costantino

This paper investigates the figure of Constantinus, the quaestor sacri Palatii who succeeded Junillus. As head of the imperial chancellery from 546, he was most likely the last quaestor under Justinian. We have very little information about him, all of it connected to the political and religious events of those years and, in particular, to Pope Vigilius. Regarding his legislative activity, very few Novellae were promulgated during his quaestura. While his style seems to often echo that of the unsurpassed Tribonian in several points, the Novellae of this period primarily deal with religious and doctrinal, as well as more generally ‘moral’, topics, an immediate reflection of the theological interests of the late Justinian period.

Il contributo indaga la figura di Costantino, il quaestor sacri palatii successore di Giunillo. A capo della cancelleria imperiale a partire dal 546, egli, probabilmente, fu l’ultimo questore sotto il regno di Giustiniano. Di lui si hanno pochissime informazioni, tutte legate alle vicende politico-religiose di quegli anni e, in particolare, al nome di papa Vigilio. Per quanto riguarda l’attività legislativa, durante la sua questura furono promulgate ben poche Novelle. Se il suo stile sembra riecheggiare in più punti quello dell’insuperabile Triboniano, il tema trattato con maggiore frequenza nelle Novelle di questo periodo è quello religioso e dottrinale, nonché più genericamente, ‘morale’, immediato riflesso degli interessi teologici del tardo Giustiniano.
