This paper addresses some core issues related to the use of parallel and comparable texts in language teaching and learning, for translation purposes and in linguistic studies. It focuses on changes in learning and work scenarios due to the increasing availability of texts and on the need to assess the quality of text sources by criteria regarding language level, linguistic and cultural transfer, the impact of standardization processes and the identification of automatic generated texts.
