The analysis of Aristophanes’ vocabulary and the relevant lexicographical tradition show some misinterpretations made by Henderson in The Maculate Muse about agricultural terminology used for the sexual organs. In addition, his view of Greek homosexuality in the second edition of this book, related to studies by Dover and Foucault, may be incongruent with what we can infer from Aristophanes and his ancient exegesis.
