This chapter surveys the earliest descriptions of the land of Cockaigne in French (fabliau de Cocagne), English (The Land of Cokaygne), and Italian (Decameron VIII, 3) literatures. These three examples have differences in content, narrative function, and significance. The foods and drinks mentioned reflect both different cultures and social milieus, thus enlightening the multiple meanings of this widespread literary theme.
