Abstract

This article takes up a theme already studied by the Author about ten years ago. The few attestations of matres in Roman cities between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD known exclusively from inscriptions are again examined. If the hypothesis of the relationship between the conferral of the title of civic mater to women who had financed private alimenta remains valid, a further possible motivation for the conferral of this female title by the cities themselves is proposed, to be related to the role of Plotina and Sabina in the imperial succession.
