The essay deals with the representation of guilt in Les Bienveillantes (2007) by Jonathan Littell and Il demone a Beslan (2011) by Andrea Tarabbia. The analysis focuses primarily on the ways by which this feeling is evoked within the texts: in Aue’s account, we come across a range of somatization disorders (dysentery, vomit) triggered by the criminal acts he took part in; in Marat’s confession, instead, regret for the deaths caused by the terrorist attack takes the shape of two demons who visit him at night. The aspect of reception is then considered: the exhibition of suffering triggers a complex and often contradictory cognitive process in the reader, due to the negative nature of the narrators – namely, a nazi and a terrorist. Nevertheless, this empathetic bond is a prerequisite to acknowledge the reflection on Evil carried out by testimonial fiction.

Abstract
Nevertheless, this empathetic bond is a prerequisite to acknowledge the reflection on Evil carried out by testimonial fiction.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
