"Secular Religion" is the title of Hans Kelsen’s late work, unpublished until 2012 and now translated in Italian. His aim was to contest the polemical reduction of modern philosophies of history and society to mere surrogates of religion having no scientific consistency, as claimed by Eric Voegelin, Raymond Aron, Karl Löwith and many other twentieth-century authors. Although not always exhaustive, Kelsen’s arguments form an useful antidote against the recurring temptation to debase the legacy of modern thought and to reproduce in its place, underhand or openly, more ancient theological views about man and social life.
