The essay reconstructs, on the basis of documentary evidence, the supposedly enthusiastic view of Italy held by the English on the eighteenth-century Grand Tour, showing that the attitude of the foreigners who travelled to the peninsula was in several cases inspired by political, religious and cultural mistrust; an attitude that was even found in the sphere that seemed to arouse the most admiration among the Granturists: the aesthetic-artistic.
