The essay searches for the hidden motives of Shaftesbury's deism, starting from the correspondences between philosophical and artistic classicism. Moralising and religious intentions, contradictions between freedom and necessity can be traced in the philosopher's ethical reflections as well as in his aesthetic doctrines, one and the other marked by the pre-eminent control of reason.
