The essay examines the notions of 'theory', 'nature' and 'art' in Joshua Reynolds, recognising in them the keys to understanding the aesthetic system of the celebrated English 'peintre-philosophe'. The investigation is then extended to the wider horizon of eighteenth-century art theory.
