Following a line of enquiry that begins with Hobbes and develops in authors such as Addison, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson and Kant, this essay aims to reconstruct the main theories of laughter in modern philosophers and art theorists. It also aims to show the moral, social, psychological, aesthetic and cognitive relevance of a subject that is still at the centre of contemporary philosophical debate and that was considered in many of its problematic and categorical forms throughout the eighteenth century.

Abstract

Following a line of enquiry that begins with Hobbes and develops in authors such as Addison, Shaftesbury, Hutcheson and Kant, this essay aims to reconstruct the main theories of laughter in modern philosophers and art theorists. It also aims to show the moral, social, psychological, aesthetic and cognitive relevance of a subject that is still at the centre of contemporary philosophical debate and that was considered in many of its problematic and categorical forms throughout the eighteenth century.
