It has long been said that philosophy begins with wonder; more truly, this feeling seems to be at the origin of our aesthetic appreciation; however, the extent to which wonder should be acknowledged as preliminary, central or marginal to aesthetic pleasure is something that needs to be evaluated, especially in light of the experiences generated by the art of the so-called avant-garde, whose aesthetics seem to coincide precisely with the intention to evoke a sense of wonder (and shock) in the spectator. This essay aims to show the way in which the sense of wonder can be a source of aesthetic pleasure. It also deals with an analysis of the theories that modern and contemporary philosophers have developed on the subject.
