John Baillie's "Essay on the Sublime", published posthumously in London in 1747 by Robert Dodsley, is one of the first English treatises to deal with the subject of the sublime. The essay is divided into six sections: the first two present a general theory of the sublime, which is then applied in the remaining four sections to the moral, artistic, scientific and mathematical fields. Baillie's essay is of considerable interest for its attempt at a theoretical definition of the sublime and its insight into the sentimental-emotional character that presides over its perception and evaluation.
