In his Réflexions critiques sur la poësie et la peinture (1719), the French art critic and theorist Jean-Baptiste Du Bos presents a description of Nicholas Poussin's famous painting Et in Arcadia ego that does not correspond to either of the two versions of the subject that the artist executed in 1630 and 1638-40. This essay aims to shed light on Du Bos's erroneous description and on the complex meaning of the painting and its Latin motto, which has been the focus of numerous studies, including Erwin Panofsky's famous essay "Et in Arcadia ego. Poussin and the Elegiac Tradition" (1936). This is a philological and iconographic study aimed at highlighting the European fortune of the theme of Arcadia in the modern age, and its aesthetic implications.
