Ex voto senza voto. Oggetti di preghiera dalla clausura

Unvowed votive offerings. Prayer objects from the cloister While the production of the ex voto object is usually entrusted to specialized lay craftspersons, in situations deemed particularly critical such production may fall on cloistered nuns. These objects have material features that are very similar to traditional ex votos, often difficult to distinguish, but with different characteristics, purpose and semantic value. They are conceived, made and even donated to the deity and deposited in the place of worship regardless of the grace being received, which, in fact most of the time is not even requested. The believer first and foremost asks to be accompanied and supported on their own path of prayer, sacrifice, and renunciation. In this presentation, I investigate the materiality of the object itself, its devotional function, and the production processes.

Se la produzione dell’oggetto ex voto è di solito affidata ad artigiani laici specializzati, in situazioni ritenute di particolare criticità essa ricade su religiose di clausura. Si tratta di oggetti con fattezze materiali molto simili agli ex voto tradizionali, spesso difficili da distinguere, ma con caratteristiche, finalità e valore semantico diversi. Essi vengono pensati, fatti costruire e addirittura donati alla divinità e depositati nel luogo di culto indipendentemente dalla ricezione della grazia che, in effetti la maggior parte delle volte non è neppure chiesta. Il credente chiede in primis di essere accompagnato e supportato durante un suo percorso di preghiera, di sacrificio, di rinuncia. In questo intervento indago la materialità dell’oggetto in sé, la sua funzione devozionale e i processi di produzione.
