The consequences of coherence on the properties of an array of Bose-Einstein condensates were studied. Peculiar interference patterns were observed in the density of the expanded cloud, reflecting the new geometry of the sample. Some key features exhibited by these optically trapped gases were highlighted on a theoretical basis.
