The debate on the screen, on its peculiar physiognomy and on its contemporary features, seems to be one of the most prominent nowadays. In this context, it is maybe possible to adopt a different point of view on these topics, approaching the problem from a different theoretical perspective. Focusing on the concept of iconostasis proposed by Florenskij, the paper aims to propose a critical rethinking of these categories in the contemporary mediascape. After a general overview on Florenskij’s image theory, the paper will focus on four specific case-studies, belonging to horror cinema, that seems to be able to explore specific key points of this theoretical approach (e.g. the link between the concepts of surface, materiality and images; the image itself as an object where the border between visible and invisible becomes evident; the temporal inversion produced by the dream image).

Abstract
The debate on the screen, on its peculiar physiognomy and on its contemporary features, seems to be one of the most prominent nowadays. In this context, it is maybe possible to adopt a different point of view on these topics, approaching the problem from a different theoretical perspective. Focusing on the concept of iconostasis proposed by Florenskij, the paper aims to propose a critical rethinking of these categories in the contemporary mediascape. After a general overview on Florenskij’s image theory, the paper will focus on four specific case-studies, belonging to horror cinema, that seems to be able to explore specific key points of this theoretical approach (e.g. the link between the concepts of surface, materiality and images; the image itself as an object where the border between visible and invisible becomes evident; the temporal inversion produced by the dream image).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
