The complex of San Giovanni in Monte – even though its present aspect is the product of interventions carried out between the 16 th and the late 17 th century AD – can be considered a canonical example for archaeology of architecture, further aided by the analysis of available historical and documentary sources. The reanalysis of the complex – enriched by the recently acquired archaeological data – has highlighted the potential for the study of this monumental area in understanding the history of this urban sector of Bologna, at least since the imperial Roman period. A fresh analysis is based on the parallel examination of the two main buildings located upon the hill (the church and the monastery), together with documents of material culture. Finally, a proposal for enhancing the touristic potential of the complex – statistical data indicate a growth of cultural tourism in the last years – consisting in the reconstruction of the urban history of a key sector for the cultural and religious life of the city, is presented.

Abstract
Finally, a proposal for enhancing the touristic potential of the complex – statistical data indicate a growth of cultural tourism in the last years – consisting in the reconstruction of the urban history of a key sector for the cultural and religious life of the city, is presented.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
