The essay analyses the evolution of party politics in postwar Italy with particular reference to their attitudes toward the democratic system and the degree of party internal democracy. The essay distinguishes the period from 1945 to the present day in three "ages”: the golden one of the immediate postwar years when parties received high level of popular support because multiparty politics coincided with the recovery of democracy and party life was very vivid and participatory; the iron age (1960s-1980s) when parties started colonizing the state and reduced their internal level democracy; the rust age, from the late 1980s up to 1994 when parties lost public confidence because of their ultimate entrenching into the state and their high level of corruption l, then leading to their collapse or radical transformation.
