The article presents a new painting by Bartolomeo Manfredi, housed in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Madignano, near Crema (Lombardy). The subject represented, among those most favoured by the artist, is Saint Jerome, and a comparison between its various known versions allows for a study of how his style evolved with respect to the artists who formed his points of reference. Thus Manfredi begins closely attuned to Caravaggio, develops under the influence of Ribera (as seen in Madignano), and in his late years creates an innovative and personal language.
