During the period 1994-2004, rotavirus particles were detected in 26,6 % of 481 cases of enteritis affecting 1-5 week old turkey poults. In this paper we report the preliminary data obtained from the characterization of 13 rotavirus strains. They were originating from different farms of Lombardia (5), Emilia (1) and Romagna (6); the last strain included in the survey was from abroad (Spain). These strains, all identified by negative staining electron microscopy, were further examined using group A ELISA and then characterised using electrophoretic analysis (PAGE) of the viral dsRNA. By this method multiple electrophoretical patterns were showed, suggesting that different rotavirus strains are co-circulating in turkey farms in North Italy.

Abstract
During the period 1994-2004, rotavirus particles were detected in 26,6 % of 481 cases of enteritis affecting 1-5 week old turkey poults. In this paper we report the preliminary data obtained from the characterization of 13 rotavirus strains. They were originating from different farms of Lombardia (5), Emilia (1) and Romagna (6); the last strain included in the survey was from abroad (Spain). These strains, all identified by negative staining electron microscopy, were further examined using group A ELISA and then characterised using electrophoretic analysis (PAGE) of the viral dsRNA. By this method multiple electrophoretical patterns were showed, suggesting that different rotavirus strains are co-circulating in turkey farms in North Italy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
