The article places the Floridum 12 within the debate on animal intelligence, which was very lively in the early imperial age. The Apulean text seems in line with the Stoic position that the ability of animals to articulate language does not imply intelligence. This theoretical assumption provides elements to address some textual issues (§ 3 and §§ 7-8). Apuleius’ in-terest in animal intelligence also emerges in the Floridum 17 and, above all, in the Metamorphoses (3, 26).

Abstract
The article places the Floridum 12 within the debate on animal intelligence, which was very lively in the early imperial age. The Apulean text seems in line with the Stoic position that the ability of animals to articulate language does not imply intelligence. This theoretical assumption provides elements to address some textual issues (§ 3 and §§ 7-8). Apuleius’ in-terest in animal intelligence also emerges in the Floridum 17 and, above all, in the Metamorphoses (3, 26).File in questo prodotto:
