Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronically recurrent pathological condition which is determined by an abnormal exposure of the esophageal mucosa to gastric refluxates. It is a common disease in industrialised countries. That is characterised by typical and atypical symptoms. Although is not necessarily associated with mucosal lesions, it strongly impairs the quality of life affected individuals. The therapeutic targets of GERD are to heal mucosal lesions, to controls symptoms, to restore an adequate quality of life, and to prevent complications and relapses without inducing unwanted effects. Proton pump inhibitors represent the treatment of choice of GERD both in the short and long term.
