Some of the results acquired and a synthesis of the competence acquired from the experiments conducted in the framework of a european project for use of austeno-ferritic stainless steel, in the construction of bridges and viaducts are shown. The research was cofinanced by RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel, contract RFS-CR-04040) and it saw more figures work together among which OMBA Impianti & Engineering SpA, a society in the field of steelworks specialized in bridge construction and already involved in the search for optimal solutions for the construction of these structures with a constant attention to quality with regard to the entire production process. The main stages of the research programme are described, in particular tests to characterize the more significant parameters of the project respect traditional solutions and are developed considerations on the aspects of maintenance and manufacture in order to be able to indicate and to suggest what may be the benefits of the use of austeno-ferritic stainless steels in erecting great infrastructures.
