Medical thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive pro- cedure which allows the examination of the pleural space in a spontaneously breathing patient; pleural biopsies under direct vision, therapeutic evacuation of effusions, delo- culation of empyema, endoscopic staging of mesothelioma, and pleurodesis for neoplasm or pneumothorax can be per- formed in one setting. Medical thoracoscopy is frequently performed by respiratory physicians in an endoscopy suite using local anaesthesia and conscious sedation or monitored anaesthesia care.
