What follows is a manuscript account of the inquisitorial affair of Fulgenzio Manfredi, a Franciscan monk who preached in Venice during the papal interdict. Even though he went to Rome with a safe-conduct, in 1610 he was burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic. His case sheds light on Sarpi’s milieu and on the delicate relationship between Rome and Venice even after the interdict was lifted. Abstract
In a few dense pages, the anony- mous author of this Relatione unmasks the unfounded accusation against the friar, whose only fault was, as Sarpi put it, to «rebuke the vices of the Roman Court».I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
