The Vita Mathildis antiquior, an example of early medieval women’s writing, narrates the life and miracles of the queen Matilde of Ringelheim, mother of Otto I, and the story of the accession to the imperial throne of the Ottonian Dynasty. Behind these two main themes, we find the main purpose of the narrative, which is the glorification of the monastery of Nordhausen, founded by queen Matilde. Through a stylistic analysis based on earlier studies by Janet Nelson the goal is to demonstrate the female authority of the literary work, and based on the philological studies conducted by Hartmut Hoffman this same thesis will attempt to collocate the drafting of the narrative to the scriptorium in the monastery of Nordhausen.

Abstract
The Vita Mathildis antiquior, an example of early medieval women’s writing, narrates the life and miracles of the queen Matilde of Ringelheim, mother of Otto I, and the story of the accession to the imperial throne of the Ottonian Dynasty. Behind these two main themes, we find the main purpose of the narrative, which is the glorification of the monastery of Nordhausen, founded by queen Matilde. Through a stylistic analysis based on earlier studies by Janet Nelson the goal is to demonstrate the female authority of the literary work, and based on the philological studies conducted by Hartmut Hoffman this same thesis will attempt to collocate the drafting of the narrative to the scriptorium in the monastery of Nordhausen.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
