The Adriatic-Ionian area is heavily undermined by earthquakes. Countries has developed laws, methods and expertise for tackling seismic vulnerability of the built environment, but consequences of earthquakes remain extremely high, especially when the focus is on historical urban centres. Starting from a detailed analysis of norms and policies, methods and techniques for expeditious assessment of seismic vulnerability and retrofitting solutions in force in the AdriaticIonian countries, action plans have been developed either at local or regional level to identify detailed actions to improve the resilience of historical areas while reducing seismic vulnerability of the building asset. Action plans represent an attempt as well to integrate seismic risk assessment and reduction within the existing urban planning tools and national planning systems.
