On the basis of the Tractarian distinction between operation and function (and particularly between truth-operation and truth-function), this paper distinguishes “operational” and “tabular” logical notations. An operational logical notation is one that represents some logical operation. A tabular logical notation is one that represents the result of some logical operation without representing the operation. The paper shows that standard notations for sentential calculus and Euler diagrams are operational, while Wittgenstein’s truth tables and Venn diagrams are tabular.

Abstract
On the basis of the Tractarian distinction between operation and function (and particularly between truth-operation and truth-function), this paper distinguishes “operational” and “tabular” logical notations. An operational logical notation is one that represents some logical operation. A tabular logical notation is one that represents the result of some logical operation without representing the operation. The paper shows that standard notations for sentential calculus and Euler diagrams are operational, while Wittgenstein’s truth tables and Venn diagrams are tabular.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
