Taking the cue from a recent, politically-laden controversy on Erik Peterson’s theory of liturgy, the aim of this paper is twofold: a) it seeks to scrutinize the role played by the particular ontology of acclamations as sacred “speech acts” in the definition of Peterson’s public-political understanding of the church; b) it attempts to work out the ontology of “the people” (laós) and, therefore, theory of institutions disclosed by the device of liturgical acclamation, thus pinpointing the political ecclesiology that shrines through Peterson’s reflections on acclamatory practices.

Abstract

Taking the cue from a recent, politically-laden controversy on Erik Peterson’s theory of liturgy, the aim of this paper is twofold: a) it seeks to scrutinize the role played by the particular ontology of acclamations as sacred “speech acts” in the definition of Peterson’s public-political understanding of the church; b) it attempts to work out the ontology of “the people” (laós) and, therefore, theory of institutions disclosed by the device of liturgical acclamation, thus pinpointing the political ecclesiology that shrines through Peterson’s reflections on acclamatory practices.
