Abstract

The early modern period saw the emergence in European culture of a phenomenon later called Christian Hebraism, which aimed to apply the philological techniques that had emerged from the study of Latin and Greek works to the Hebrew text of the Bible and subsequently to the other sources of its tradition. This new approach fundamentally changed thinking about Judaism and expanded the boundaries within which it had previously been understood. Among the protagonists of the first phase was the Calabrian Agazio Guidacerio, professor of Hebrew first at the Sapienza in Rome and then at the Collège Royal in Paris, whose teaching and works helped shape European Hebrew studies in the sixteenth century.
