Una rassegna delle tipologie di siti e manufatti della Guerra Fredda in Italia

The research explores the military sites and artefacts built during the Cold War in Italy, such as nuclear weapon stores, communication and radar systems, military airfields, aviation and naval sites, civil defence structures. This paper presents a short chronology of event about the development of the missile sites during the “first” Cold War (1945-1962). In this period, during the NATO strategy of “massive retaliation” tZo typologies of sites mainly built: Jupiter missiles sites in Puglia and Basilicata, and Nike Ajax missiles sites, both under the Italian Air Force control. After the Cuba crisis and the change of the strategy in “fle[ible response”, the Nike Ajax were replaced by Nike Hercules, under the Italian Air Force control, and Hawk missiles sites were built, under the Italian Army control.
