The paper presents the process that led to the protection of the icon of the Cold War, part of the most recent European history, and its current challenges through two examples. In 2019 there was a great number of celebrations for the 30 years anniversary, but the identification of this important piece of history was quite recent. The paper presents two different sites: the Berlin Wall Memorial, which focuses on the victims history and therefore on the fabric and authenticity of the Wall; the East Side Gallery, which is a living heritage, a continuum between memory and use.
