Fake news and conspiracy theories are two of the prevailing forms in today's disinformation landscape. Which features do they share? And what specificities do they present? This contribution invites us to read fake news as a contemporary and digital form of gossip, and to see conspiracy theories as real ideologies, in the sense in which Umberto Eco defined ideologies. The most relevant difference between the two forms: the narrative scope.

Abstract

Fake news and conspiracy theories are two of the prevailing forms in today's disinformation landscape. Which features do they share? And what specificities do they present? This contribution invites us to read fake news as a contemporary and digital form of gossip, and to see conspiracy theories as real ideologies, in the sense in which Umberto Eco defined ideologies. The most relevant difference between the two forms: the narrative scope.
