The aim of the present analysis is to provide students and translators of Chinese with a number of useful tools to interpret linguistic material within a cross-cultural perspective. In the first part, the paper will outline a brief account of the introduction of an economic lexicon at the end of the imperial era, at the same time showing how the Chinese language has been able to adapt and to create new ideas. In the second part, the accent will be placed on the new meanings that have emerged in the language of business operations, the language of economics and the language of law.
