Reaction of [Fe2(CO)2(cp)2(μ-CO)(μ-CSMe)]SO3 CF3 (1; cp = η-C5H5) with Grignard reagents RMgCl (R = benzyl, phenyl, isopropyl) forms the alkylidene compounds [Fe2(CO)2(cp)(C5H4R)(μ-CO){μ-C(SMe)H}] (2) and the corresponding cyclopentadiene complexes [Fe2-(CO)2(cp)(C5H5R)(μ-CO)(μ-CSMe)] (3). The latter complexes are the intermediates in the formation of 2 which are formed by hydrogen migration from the C5H5R ring to the μ-C carbyne carbon. The molecular structure of [Fe2(CO)2(cp)(C5H4Bz)(μ-CO){μ-C(SMe)H}] has been determined by X-ray crystallography.
