The heteropolynuclear cyano-bridged complexes [(C5H5)Fe(CO)(CNMLn)(CNM′L′n)], {MLn = M′L′n = (C5H5)Fe(CO)2 or W(CO)5; MLn = (C5H5)Fe(CO)2, M′L′n = W(CO)5} and mixed isocyanide complexes [(C5H5)Fe(CO)(CNMLn)(CNR)], {MLn = W(CO)5, R = CPh3; MLn = (C5H5)Fe(CO)2, R = CH3} have been obtained by metallation or alkylation of the two terminal CN ligands of K[(C5H5)Fe(CO)(CN)2]. Comparison of the bonding properties of the CNMLn and CNR ligands, based upon their relevant spectroscopic data, are discussed. Furthermore, two new isomeric heterobinuclear cyano-bridged complexes of the form [(C5H5)(CO)2FeCNW(CO)5] and [(C5H5)(CO)2FeNCW(CO)5] have been synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Finally the reactions with nucleophiles of the last two compounds have been also examined. © 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
